The province of Antalya includes the southeastern part of western Pamphylia and eastern Lycia, which are ancient regions in history.
Although the origin of the Lycians, who settled in the western borders of present-day Antalya, is discussed, Hittite and ancient Egyptian sources (2000 BC) mention a tribe called Lucius or Luca. It is very likely that this tribe belonged to the Lycian nation, which is known for its kinship with the Luwians, their powerful neighbors on the Mediterranean coast, who call themselves Termili.
Most of the Pamphylia region, where there is much debate about borders, is in present-day Antalya. Many tribes are believed to live together in Pamphylia, which literally means “land of people of all nations, land of races.” A prophetic inscription found in the city of Siedra says that “you Pamphulians of Siedra, living in the land of mixed nations …”; This inscription also provides information about the social structure of the city.
The Pamphylian Greeks form one of the oldest Hellenic groups in Anatolia, according to the methods of comparative linguistics. Some of the linguistic features of the Mukens and Dorians can be found in their language. For this reason, they are thought to have migrated to Anatolia in the early first millennium BC. They were intertwined with the people they met in Anatolia and were influenced by their beliefs and different cultural characteristics.
There are not many documents about the early history not only of these Greeks, but also of other peoples living in Pamphylia in general.
As a result, it is clear that the research of the Ancient Age in the region has not yet reached saturation, in research that deals mainly within nations and cultures from the first eras to the era of the Roman Empire. There are many problems that need to be answered, especially with regard to the pre-Roman phase. Linguistic research occupies a large place in their elucidation. The city of Antalya is the city where the most written documents have been found in all of Anatolia. As such, the Antalya region is an important center for the study of history, language and archeology. In recent years, written evidence of a new language has been found in the direction of Koprucayi, examples of which have not been found so far. These findings show that regional studies have much deeper dimensions than expected.
According to legend, Atalos II told his people: “Go, find heaven on earth.” His men come to Antalya after a long search and inform their King Athalos II; He really likes Antalya and is building a city on the lap of paradise.
